Reading Programs

We, at Mata, participate in many wonderful reading programs to help develop and sustain a lifelong interest in reading and literacy. These are just a few examples of what we do.

Texas Bluebonnet Award

Students in 3rd-6th grades across Texas are encouraged to read five of the yearly Texas Bluebonnet Award nominees and vote for their favorite to help determine the winner. Mata students are introduced to the books during library classes and are encouraged to check them out and keep a log of books read and thoughts on each. Students who "read 5, then decide" are given a gift or incentive at the conclusion of the program in late February.

Book It!

Pizza Hut Book-It!

This program begins in October and continues through the end of March. Teachers must register their own students. Students are able to get a free personal pan pizza each month based on meeting reading requirements that the teacher has set. The kids love it! Click on the icon above for more info on the program, or click here to print reading calendars to fill out and return to your child's teacher.

Six Flags - Read to Succeed

The Six Flags Read to Succeed program typically starts in January and concludes in early March. Students need to read six hours during that time and they earn a free ticket to Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington, TX. The program is currently on hiatus. Check back periodically for updates.

Read Across America

Read across America is traditionally celebrated each year in conjunction with Dr. Seuss' birthday (March 2). Nationwide, students celebrate reading in various ways.  At many schools, students read a Dr. Seuss book and are encouraged to dress up as one of his characters. The National Education Agency (and Mata) would like to encourage a celebration and love of reading all year long! Check out the NEA website for many creative ideas. (Check current school calendars and news for participation details.)
